Why vendor comparisons rank first on Google

Search "X vs Y" for any two PR tools and the first results are often written by one of the two vendors. That is not an accident. It is a content strategy that works precisely because search engines cannot tell who wrote the page.

The mechanics

A vendor publishes a comparison of itself against a competitor. The page targets the exact query buyers type ("X vs Y"), is longer and more structured than most independent coverage, and gets internal links from the vendor's own domain - which is usually the strongest domain in the results. Search engines rank it for relevance and authority, not for neutrality, because neutrality is not a ranking signal.

Our 2026 Buyer Trust Report found 68 percent of PR teams say such a page misled a tool purchase at least once. The pattern respondents described most: the page ranks the publisher first and buries its own weaknesses.

What buyers can do

Check who publishes every comparison page before trusting it: scroll to the footer, look for a disclosure page, and ask whether the "reviewer" sells a competing product. 92 percent of the buyers we surveyed now do exactly this.

What to do about it, concretely

Before trusting any comparison page: check the footer for the publisher's business. If they sell a competing product, mentally add "(ad)" to the title. Second, find the page's weakest claim about the publisher's own tool and check it against G2 or the vendor's own docs. Third, ask whether the comparison discloses what it does NOT cover. Honest comparisons list their blind spots; vendor comparisons list their features.

The irony, noted

The mechanics that let vendor comparisons rank first also let this research practice exist: independent studies can outrank vendor pages on the same queries by being more rigorous, more cited, and more specific. The same algorithm that amplifies the bias also amplifies its correction, when the correction is built well enough.
