Data Brief PSR-DB-2026-03 · July 7, 2026 · Draws on the Stacking Study sample (N=286)

Data brief: the cancellation window

When PR teams cancel tools, and what pushes them out.

5.5 monthsmedian time from purchase to cancellation for tools bought on comparison-blog recommendations
13 monthsmedian for tools bought on peer recommendation
44%cite 'unmet expectation set by reviews' as a primary exit trigger

What the data shows

Tools bought on comparison-blog recommendations churn more than twice as fast as tools bought on peer recommendation: 5.5 months versus 13. The primary exit trigger, at 44 percent, is the gap between what the review promised and what the tool delivered - the mislead cost documented in the hidden cost of thin reviews.

Implication for buyers

If your buying signal is a comparison blog, budget for a second purchase within six months. If your signal is a verified peer or a trial on real data, the same budget funds a year of the right tool.

Method note

From the Stacking Study sample (N=286, September 2025); cancellation questions were asked of respondents reporting at least one past tool cancellation. Figures describe the weighted sample.
